Every service member deserves the unwavering loyalty of a companion. We work to bridge the gap between service members and shelter dogs—providing companionship, support, and healing while reducing the long wait times and removing the cost for traditional service animals.

At the Shipman Foundation, our mission is to help both service members and rescue dogs find healing through companionship. While we’re just getting started, here are a few stories from service members whose lives have already been changed by the bond they share with their dogs.

Every day, service members face the challenges of PTSD, depression, and isolation, struggles that contribute to over 6,400 veteran suicides each year. Service dogs have been proven to provide life-changing support, but the wait for an approved service animal can take years, and the cost ranges from $10,000 to $50,000, making them inaccessible to many.
At the same time, thousands of dogs in Alabama shelters face an uncertain future. Over 107,000 animals entered shelters last year, and more than 17,000 were euthanized due to overcrowding.
By pairing service members with rescued companion animals at no cost to the service member, we provide immediate relief to both. Service members gain a loyal companion to help them heal, and shelter dogs find loving homes. Together, we create second chances for those who need them most.
Through these commitments, we aim to build lasting partnerships that improve lives, offering both service members and rescue animals the love and stability they deserve.

Have questions about what we do or how you can get involved? Whether you’re a service member looking for more information, a shelter interested in partnering with us, or a supporter wanting to help, we’d love to hear from you. Reach out today, and we’ll be happy to assist!

“Emma provides such fullness of constant companionship in my life. In fact, when I started dating years ago, I used her as my standard for a boyfriend saying, “I will only be with someone who is as excited to see me everyday as my dog is!” Angie SU.S. Army”
